SECOND ANNUAL VI COMIC CON SET FOR JUNE 2018 IN SIDNEY
Organizers of the Vancouver Island Comic Con are pleased to announce that Van Isle Con 2018 will take place on Sunday, June 10th, at the Mary Winspear Centre in beautiful Sidney by the Sea. Town of Sidney Council approved the Memorandum of Understanding with the Sidney Business Improvement Area Society at last night’s Council meeting, paving the way for the 2018 Comic Convention.
Sidney BIA President, Susan Simosko, said, “We are thrilled that this exciting and popular event will once again be held in Sidney. We look forward to working with Josh Kully as the Convention Coordinator. He did such an outstanding job last year. The 2017 Comic Con was so well organized and attracted some 2,500 people! Feedback from exhibitors and the general public convinced us that this event is here to stay in Sidney. It offers a much-needed special event for young people, one that will showcase local talent and the Geek culture.”
The 2017 Vancouver Island Comic Con was part of the Town of Sidney’s Canada 150 programming and one of the events associated with Sidney’s Comic Book Festival that was inspired by the Sidney Museum. It targeted an under-represented fan base, better known as Geek Culture, by bringing together over 100 exhibitors and presenters under one roof at the Mary Winspear Centre. This included an Artist’s Alley, crafts people, gamers, comic book dealers and more. The Con also included a Cos Play Contest and three panels that discussed industry specific topics and a special presentation in the Charlie White Theatre by Disney Studio’s, Chris Williams.
Convention Coordinator, Josh Kully, is a local comic book illustrator and writer who regularly attends other conventions. This has enabled him to combine his experience, skills and passion to stimulate the interest of comic book enthusiasts on and off the Island. Kully states, “Our goal is to get back to the roots of comic cons and provide an opportunity for the incredible talent we have right here on the Island. We want this event to be as open as possible which is why our exhibitor rates will remain low at $25 and entrance to the event will be by donation. We anticipate some amazing guests and panels and I am confident that in collaboration with the Sidney BIA, the Town of Sidney, the Sidney Museum and other community supporters, we will once again create a fun, dynamic and successful event!”
Plans for the Vancouver Island Comic Con have been underway since the success of 2017 event. With Sidney Council’s approval of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Sidney BIA, organizers are ready to move forward. Applications for Exhibitors will be accepted soon but in the meantime, Kully encourages people interested in getting involved or learning more about Van Isle Con to visit the website at www.vanislecomiccon.com and to follow the Con’s social media channels Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
